Mission
The purpose of Active Minds is to raise awareness and promote conversation about mental health. We hold various activities each month centered around a theme that respectfully and effectively addresses different mental health related topics. Our goal is to make students more comfortable and more aware of these problems while offering additional resources to break the stigma! We work very closely with the Mind Your Health Campaign and the Mental Health Task force on campus.

The NMU Conservation Crew is a student-led organization dedicated to educating students and community members about the environment by hosting group hikes, trash clean-ups, and conservation-related workshops and events. EcoReps is a student sustainability peer-to-peer education program. It is designed to give students the resources and knowledge to solve environmental, economic and social sustainability issues. Reps function as the student branch of the Sustainability Advisory Council, and work together to organize campus-wide programming, carry out collaborative projects, and represent the program at various on and off-campus events. Reps will be introduced to new topics, help plan activities and implement actions that will improve sustainability on campus and in the community.

The Food Recovery Network is a food recovery program which works with NMU dining services and local charitable food distributors to bring food to those in need in our community. These recoveries help to divert food waste while also addressing a community challenge. We also strive to educat our community on the subject of food waste and how to reduce it! The purpose of this organization the planning and running of an event called Healthy Hearts and Happy Minds. For a small fee, parents can drop off their elementary aged children for a few hours of games and activities that teaching about healthy habits. Snacks will be provided to the children. The money from the participation fee will go to supporting the Upper Peninsula's chapter of Girls on the Run.

Did you know that hunger and poverty are prevalent issues in Marquette? Join Marquette Ending Hunger to combat rural poverty and hunger in our community. Members will be given the opportunity to actively raise awareness in the Marquette community, fundraise to directly benefit those in need, attend planning meetings for the group and volunteer locally at food pantries. We help to organize Marquette Empty Bowls and the NMU portion of the TV6 Canathon, among many other events and activities. The goal of the NMU Food Pantry is to provide any university-affiliated persons with resources to combat food insecurity. On a regular basis, the food pantry is stocked with a range of food items, hygiene products, household goods, cleaning supplies, kitchen items, baby supplies [diapers, etc], clothing, bedding, and small household appliances. Beyond spreading awareness of an important campus resource, we are diligent in our efforts to ensure that anyone who visits the pantry feels safe, welcomed, and supported. ROC Humanitas will facilitate an environment for students to learn, reflect, and act on humanitarian crises both locally and globally. It will be centered on the discernment of individual and collective responsibilities to respond to humanitarian needs wherever they arise. It will complement students’ fields of study with the concepts, theories, and competencies to alleviate suffering and protect human dignity and justice. The NMU Volunteer Center was formed in 1992 to provide a link between the Marquette community and Northern Michigan University. At the Volunteer Center, NMU students, student organizations, faculty, and staff can find out about volunteer opportunities and local contact information for non-profit organizations looking for volunteers.

The Volunteer Center also coordinates Make A Difference Day each October. Finally, the Volunteer Center works to encourage service through recognizing volunteers’ achievements.
