Subject: SLFP: Community Service Internship Information

Dear Aurora Blocks -

I hope this e-mail finds you all well and your winter semester is off to a great start.

The purpose of this e-mail is to outline the process for developing your Community Service Internship (CSI) and provide additional information about potential sites.  First, developing a successful CSI does take time and effort. We are here to assist you with the process, but the CSI is ultimately the responsibility of the student fellow (you!).  I hope this e-mail helps provide clarity on this process.  Please review the information below.

Important Due Dates
Initial proposal are due by Friday, March 15 (Mentor Signature is required)
Final proposals are due by Monday, April 15 (Site Advisor Signature is required)
*Failure to comply with dates may result in being dropped from the program. Please reach out before the deadlines if you need assistance.
All proposal should be e-mailed to SLFP@nmu.edu or dropped off to the Center for Student Enrichment.

You can complete your final proposals before these due dates and start as soon as the initial proposal is approved. Here's the current list of CSIs (Aurora Block -CSI Ideas Link); you do not need to choose from this list, but some of you might be interested in continuing an existing CSI.  This list will updated as I receive more information from current and potential sites.    You are also welcome to reach out to any organizations that interest you.  There is a tremendous need in our community for student fellows!

Here are the general guidelines:

  1. Your Community Service Internship should be centered around your area(s) of interest and assist in meeting a community need.

  2. Your Community Service Internship must be unpaid.

  3. Your Community Service Internship must be partnered with a local, regional, or national non-profit organization or government agency, and you will need a site advisor.

  4. Each Community Service Internship will be for 100 hours.  These 100 hours will need to be completed by April 2025. Hours that can be included:

    • Services Hours

    • Planning Meetings

    • Meetings with your Site Advisor(s)

    • Research and Training (non-credit hour) required to complete your internship

  5. All CSIs should be a combination of leadership and service.

We will cover this information at your first Fellowship Meeting and during your winter one-on-ones.

Your Initial Proposal worksheet is due March 15, 2024.
