Join Campus Cinema, the Native American Student Association, the Center for Native American Studies, and the Office of Opportunity, Empowerment & People for a screening of Smoke Signals, the groundbreaking 1998 film written by Sherman Alexie and one of the first major features written, directed, and co-produced by Native Americans.

Follow Victor and Thomas on a journey from the Coeur d'Alene Reservation to Arizona and back, in a story that's by turns hilarious, heartbreaking, and deeply human. Smoke Signals is a modern classic of Native storytelling that broke ground for Indigenous filmmakers and remains a touchstone more than 25 years later.

Here's the bonus: the actor who plays Thomas, Dr. Evan Adams, isn't just on your screen. He's coming to NMU as the keynote speaker for the Indigenous Perspectives Symposium on Friday, September 25th at the Northern Center. Come see him in one of the most iconic roles in Native cinema, then hear him speak in person just days later.
