Welcome again to the Student Leader Fellowship Program! We hope you’re all looking forward to the mentoring component of the SLFP. This is the first step to being matched with an eager community leader to serve as your Mentor, starting next year (Fall 2025 - Winter 2026).
It is important to understand that this is a LEADERSHIP mentoring experience. Although there may be some educational benefits that emerge if you are matched with someone in your career field, this is viewed as a bonus. What we hope that you gain from the SLFP’s mentoring component is an understanding and appreciation of leadership at the community level.
What You Need To Do:
Complete your Mentee Profile, located here. The information you put on this form is very important to help us locate a mentor who is compatible with you. Please be as descriptive as possible. Your Mentor will not see this form.
Write a personal letter introducing yourself to your Mentor-to-be. Your Mentor will receive this in July/August during their Mentor Orientation.
- This can be typed or handwritten.
- Please offer relevant facts about yourself such as your major, career aspirations, student organization involvements, hobbies, community interests, what you are doing this summer, and so on.
- Make it neat and presentable and put sufficient effort into it; this is the first impression your Mentor will have of you!
- Please include the best way to contact you (email, phone number).
- Email your letter to slfp@nmu.edu or drop it off in our office (1101 Northern Center).
Complete your Mentor Matching Materials by Monday, April 28.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We’re very excited for you to begin the SLFP!
